Bachata Socials

A bachata social is an open social-dancing event — usually 2 to 5 hours in the evening — where dancers of all levels partner up and rotate to bachata (and often salsa and kizomba) played by a DJ. There is no performance or set choreography, just freestyle social dancing. Most run weekly at a studio, bar, or dance hall and frequently open with a short beginner lesson.

Most bachata socials charge a cover of $5 to $20 at the door, and many weekly socials are free or included with a class earlier that evening. Larger themed parties or socials with live music typically run $15 to $30. The cover usually includes the DJ and the floor for the whole night.

Wear something breathable you can move and sweat in, plus shoes with smooth soles that pivot easily — suede-soled dance shoes are ideal, but clean leather-soled shoes work too. Bring a spare shirt for long nights and avoid sticky rubber soles that grip the floor and strain your knees.

Most bachata socials start between 8 and 10 PM and run past midnight, with the floor filling up an hour or two after the listed start time. Socials attached to a class often begin right after the lesson. Check each listing — weekend socials tend to start and end later than weeknight ones.
